How to get to El Valle, Samaná

From Santo Domingo

Most visitors arrive through Santo Domingo (Las Américas / SDQ). The drive is roughly three hours, almost all of it on the modern DR-7 Juan Pablo II toll highway across the country to Samaná — an easy, scenic road. From Samaná town it is a short climb over the ridge and down into El Valle.

Allow a little extra for tolls and a stop; the last fifteen minutes are a mountain road, not a highway.

From the Samaná airports

Samaná El Catey International Airport (AZS) is the main gateway, on the western side of the peninsula. From there it is about an hour and a quarter to El Valle by car.

The smaller Arroyo Barril airstrip (EPS), used mostly for charters and domestic hops, sits much closer to Samaná town — roughly 35 to 45 minutes from El Valle.

From Las Terrenas or the north coast

If you are already on the peninsula, El Valle is about 45 to 50 minutes from Las Terrenas over the mountain. Coming from Cabarete, Cabrera, or the Puerto Plata side, plan on a longer coastal drive plus that final stretch.

The last stretch

However you arrive, the final descent into El Valle is a winding mountain road that opens onto the valley and Playa El Valle. It is paved for most of the way; after heavy rain, a higher-clearance vehicle is reassuring, though not essential in dry conditions.

There is no public transport into the valley itself, so a rental car, a private transfer, or a local driver is the way to move around once you are here.
